EVENTING: Zara Phillips Gallops Into Lead After Cross Country
 |
| Zara Phillips and Toytown jump into the lead (photo: Kit Houghton/FEI) |
(Aachen, Germany) - It was cross-country day for the eventers and the threat of rain held off to ease up on the tensions of the demanding, and nerve-wracking, course designed by Britain’s Mike Etherington-Smith. Practically from start to finish, there was a tension in the air that was palpable – and not just for the crowds. Many riders saw their scores plummet as a group of very troublesome fences presented tricky angles, tough questions to be answered and penalty points added quicker than you could keep track. To say the least, it was a course that required courage and skill. Over the day, seven horses were retired; 10 were eliminated; and two were withdrawn.
At the end of a fantastic clear round, Zara Phillips (GRB) and Toy Town are in the lead on their Dressage score of 41.70. Germany’s Bettina Hoy and Ringwood Cockatoo are close seconds exactly 2 points behind (43.70). Fellow German team member Frank Ostholt aboard Air Jordan 2 is in third position on 46.90.

(Aachen, Germany) - The Dressage phase of the Eventing competition was completed today. With a remarkable score of 36.50 penalty points, Germany's own Bettina Hoy and Ringwood Cockatoo have taken over the lead. “It was amazing to see so many fans cheering with German flags all over. It was hard, but I remained focused on Dressage,” Bettina said. She, as a true supporter of her own nation, has died parts of her hair in the colours of the German flag and is very much part of the bright atmosphere.

(Aachen, Germany) – Day two of the grand prix didn’t give any of the remaining 43 riders much of an advantage when it came to weather, but it did not seem to affect the Americans, the Dutch, the Germans or the Danes. The crowd of 32,000 definitely got their money’s worth today witnessing the best piaffes, passages, pirouettes and transitions in the world. Because of the caliber of today’s riders, the photographers did not get much of a break with shutters clicking almost nonstop. The silence was so intense at times that when small errors were made or the crowd didn’t agree with a score that flashed across the screen, there were loud sighs.

(Aachen, Germany) - After four long years of waiting, an anxious equestrian world watched the clock roll down to the moment everyone had their eyes turned to – the Opening Ceremonies of the 2006 Aachen FEI World Equestrian Games. And while gray skies and wet and windy weather welcomed the crème of the equine world to the picturesque town located in the westernmost corner of one of Europe’s most powerful horse countries, not even a downright deluge could have dampened the excitement and energy that was waiting to be unleashed over the next two weeks. And if ticket sales are any indication, the city of a quarter-of-a-million residents will forever be remembered by visitors long after the innumerable horse trailers and equestrian vacationers have made their way home.
